Editor's note- ESG, which contains sustainable ideas through environmental and social responsibility and management, is being made mandatory, not an option. Yet, quite a number of businesses are still ignoring this matter. Practicing ESG management is directly linked to consumption value, which can be a measure. Thus, we are reporting on the steps of leading ESG management businesses this year, hoping to bring messages to both consumers and businesses that are not aware of their importance.

[Consumerwide - Hayoung Chang Reporter/Yohan Bok Reporter] LG H&H is striving for ESG management through its cosmetics and household goods businesses. They focus on making beautiful, healthy, and refreshing lives for customers while supporting female, teen, and elderly people. LG H&H is practicing environmental production, training MZ generation climate activities, supporting various people groups, and participating in global initiatives to strengthen female capacity.


E: Environmental Management: From Packaging to Supporting Future Climate Activists.


LG H&H began the Global Eco-Leader Programme (MZ Generation Climate Activist Training) in 2022, aiming for carbon neutrality and customer value innovation. During the 1st and 2nd programmes, 200 young adults from Korea, the US, the Netherlands, and other nations have participated in the climate environmental activities. In 2023 (the second programme), activists have brought about positive change through various activities: an environmental campaign for amending the "expansion of farm waste range", a "tumbler circulation campaign" on campus, a facilitation re-fill station booth, clensing school pond using EM soil balls, coffee bean upcycling activities in school cafes, environmental mentoring and energy education for local teens, and campus energy waste check ups. LG H&H plans to support training for young activities, believing the ideas from young adults during the project can bring carbon neutralisation, local environment enhancement, and customer value innovation in a shorter time.

LG is also utilising recycled carton paper, which is complicated to recycle, for toothpaste and cosmetics packaging. Through the increasing use of recycled paper, they plan to contribute to resource circulation and esg management. This is the first case of applying recycled carton paper to cosmetics and household products in Korea. Since the beginning of this year, they have applied cosmetics containers made out of plastic waste to two types of products: Love us, Love Earth editions. (Clean Beauty brand/Beyond Angel Aqua Cream)


S: social responsibility... supporting females with impairments.


LG H&H is supporting females with impairments by giving out auxiliary devices while encouraging social involvement through the "Giving Wing to Females with Impairments" project. This project began in 2020, and this year it has expanded. Now the project applies to people with mental, brain, visual, and hearing impairments, and a total of 30 people are supported annually. For the last four years, a total of 112 people have benefited. The auxiliary devices include mobility aids, intelligent work assistants, devices for childcare, and health care aids. From this year on, they are providing FM transceiver systems and voice-text message translation subtitle glasses to females with impairments. This support aims to relieve the digital information gap between people with and without impairments.

LG H&H has chosen 35 participants after paper and interview tests for the 5th Natural Beauty Live Creator (2023) training project. Natural Beauty Live Creator is an influencer training project to support "Beauty Creator" (experienced) and Live Commerce Expert sector job candidates. It has begun in 2018.

In cooperation with the Korea Red Cross, LG H&H has been hosting the DoubleU Campaign. The campaign began in 2019 and since then has provided customised support in the economic, mental, and legal areas for violence victims while also offering violence prevention education in schools for the last five years. Recently, the "Smile, School" programme, which is a customised education for the prevention of violence in school, caught attention. The programme supports violence victims with various services (medical, daily, housing expenses, and mental consulting) in connection with the police office.

LG H&H passed on 400 Love of Hopeboxes to Korean war veterans on June 19th in cooperation with the Korea People of Sharing at Gyeonggido Gimposi, the Second Marine Division. For the event, 70 war veterans from Gimpo, Ganghwa, and Seoul (Gwanak) have participated.

LG H&H has begun a music concert, Banjjak Banjjak Perio, where children can experience healthy sanitation habits through fun music and motions, since 2017. In 2022, 75% of parents of participant children answered that the sanitation habits of their children had improved since the concert. Besides, it's also been observed that the participant children talk about sanitation among themselves or imitate actions through the concert. Banjjak Banjjak Perio is planned to approach beyond preschool children, but elementary kids (1~3rd grades) and schools for children with impairments between June and October in the capital area and Buyeo, Hongseong, and Gimje for 20 times of concerts.


G: Governing Structure: Participating in global initiatives.


LG H&H is also planning to participate in global initiatives by strengthening female capacity (7 principles) and solidifying their position as gender equality. (since 2022) The 7 principles include gender equality, equal leadership, fair opportunity, embracement and elimination of discrimination, health care and safety, freedom from violence, education and training, business development, supply chain and marketing activity, local society leadership and participation, transparency, estimation, and disclosure.
