[Consumerwide - Jinil Kang Reporter / Yohan Bok Reporter]  Three major telecommunication businesses are striving for ESG management through social contribution activities and reducing energy consumption and space, which can be a measure of consumption value.

Referring to the industry, SKT is replacing wire-network with 100Gbps unit transmission, which used to be used for 5G backbone networks, with 400Gbps unit transmission. It begins in the Seongsu-Boramae area and expands to overall domestic areas in Korea after going through tests and monitoring processes.

This business is due to technical demands like AI, Cloud, Metabus, 5G enhancement, and commercialization of 6G, which require a large amount of communication traffic, and it is going to reduce consumption in various areas, including energy, space for installation of equipment, constructing extra cables, and carbon emissions, which used to be produced by constructing internet backbone networks by making a super quantity of wire network systems.

An associated person from SKT said, "We came to the point of replacing the mega-quantity transmission system with a super-quantity level in order to cover over traffic demand from the diffusion of 5G commercialization while preparing in advance for the enhancement of 5G and 6G commercialization. SKT will keep striving to offer the highest level of quality through constant network development."

KT is practicing ESG management by facilitating the "KT Kkumpum Class Mentor Group, in which graduates of Kkumpum schools support current Kkumpum students. The mentor group includes people who are working in various sectors of society, such as design, barristers, professional bowling athletes, salarymen, and government officials. The class is a part of "KT Sorichatghi" (recovery of hearing loss), and it's been supporting citizens with hearing impairments through a customised training programme since 2012.

KT So-ri-chat-ghi began in 2003. Besides medical treatment, including cochlear implant surgery, they are facilitating social recovery therapy (SRT) sessions in speech rehabilitation, music therapy, and art therapy. KT has supported 26230 children with hearing impairments during the first half of the year in cooperation between experts in various sectors, including language and speech therapists, hearing therapists, and social welfare officers, so that they can maintain an ordinary life. An associated person from KT said, "KT will support children and citizens with hearing impairments to grow and become rooted in Korean society so that they too can benefit the neighbourhood while practicing ESG management in various sectors, including digital embracement."

LGUplus is supporting a platform that aims to train 100 children and 100 parents (mothers from Vietnam) from 100 households in domestic areas. For children, they are providing an online course that is made up of national general education focused on 3–5 year-old children (Nuri course), book reading for language and literacy enhancement, and a mental music kit class once a month for a total of twenty-four times. For mothers, understanding children's coaching, coaching children's discipline, and understanding the Korean culture and education system, online courses are offered once every month, totaling six times. The beneficiaries are chosen from the Green Fund between September 2023 and June 2024, and a tablet is given per family for educational purposes. They are looking forward to seeing better academic achievement in children from international family backgrounds while helping the family build a common emotional ground.

LGUplus is facilitating the "Post Office Altteulphone Communication Sharing" programme, which supports customers from vulnerable families by paying their phone expenses for a year in cooperation with Korea Post Fund, Korea Post, and Great Human Connect. Post Office Altteulphone Communication Sharing began in 2021, and this is the second project. In particular, they are supporting one thousand applicants (first come, first served) among the insurers of "Post Office Insurance, the Happiness of 10 Thousand Won,", which is exclusively offered to low-income families under the "Chasangwi Class" (2nd class of low-income families), by paying their full phone expenses for one year under the condition of using the "Story, the Happiness of 10 Thousand Won" plan. (12300 won per month, including VAT, providing limitless voice call and text message with 4GB data (after consuming the 4GB limitless 400kbps speed (low quality of video watching with navigation, web surfing use) of data is provided.) Four participant organisations are donating a total of 158,400,000 won for one thousand citizens, which is 158,400 won per person during 12 months.

An associated person from LGU said, "We've planned this project to support applicant children and mothers in the midst of children with international family backgrounds rapidly increasing while the rate of these children entering the high educational institute is decreasing. We hope our platform may enhance their capacity to study. We are also honoured to help citizens in vulnerable circumstances by paying their phone expenses through the Altteulphone Communication Sharing activity. LGU will continue to discover and offer programmes in relation to social contribution, vitalization of Altteulphone, and improvement of customer convenience.
