[Consumerwide_ HueSoung, Jun Reporter / Yohan, Bok Reporter] Balan made official apologies for leaking personal information. They've been slapped with a record 500 million won penalty for this.
Accepting decisions made by PIPC (Personal Information Protection Commission,South Korea), Balan has expressed how seriously they felt responsible for this.
On the 10th of Aug, PIPC voted for a penalty of 512.59 million won, and a 14.4 million won fine at the Central government complex for Balan leaking personal information.
PIPC said that there have been two times of hacking on the Balan website in March and April. The hacker stole 1.62 million users' personal information, such as names, addresses, and cellular phone numbers.
Balan's way of handling customers' information has been exposed through the event; they have not been managing individual accounts properly by neglecting inactive accounts and having no restriction on IP addresses.
Moreover, the informing process was poor after the hackers went; customers couldn't know when it occurred, and what kind of information was compromised. On the 11th of Aug, Balan officially accepted the decisions made by PIPC.
Balan said, "Last March and April, an unauthorized person accessed with an abnormal method. We blocked and thoroughly checked all possible roots in doubts as soon as we discovered them. In May, SK-shielders and Balan signed an MOU(memorandum of understanding) based on security consulting to develop a real-time protection system to prevent cyberattacks. Currently, we are running a cloud security solution and continuous security monitoring (24hr/365days) against cyber hacking."
Balan apologized officially promising to prevent a recurrence.
Balan said, "Our security team is made of the best members in the industry. We will strive for our best 'Balan' may become the safest platform. Again, We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused."
