[Consumerwide - Jinil Kang Reporter / Yohan Bok Reporter]  Many companies consistently fund initiatives that identify and develop potential experts so they may establish themselves in society and leave a positive impact. Scholarship is one of the most representative ways to make a social contribution, as it brings opportunity to students, including those from families in financially vulnerable conditions, to establish a dream future or to study in a better environment through educational support. This is the second report after the one written on February 19.

Business sharing... scholarship

The Woowahan (Baemin) is sponsoring 6 million won at maximum for each undergraduate and high school scholar this year, who are children of restaurant business owners having financial crises. (The Woowahan Business Owner's Scholarship). The scholarship counts 10 billion won since 2022, and it is sourced from the Woowahan Business Owner's Caring Fund (Kim Bongjin, the founder and visionary CEO of the Woowahan), which is on a 20 billion won scale. (with additional corporate funds) A total of 619 students got 3.6 billion won of scholarships until last year. The scholarship expenses include a scholarship, mentoring, and an experimental programme.

Chest and Jump (an NGO in educational social ventures) is taking care of facilitation, each fund, and scholarship projects. Students from restaurant owner's families, whose parents have been in the restaurant business for over one year along with financial difficulties (under 130% in the middle income level), can apply for the scholarship. (*a beneficiary of welfare in undergraduate tuition; under class 6) More precisely, high school students are given an annual tuition allowance of 3 million won in addition to opportunities for cultural experiences (parents' fees are covered for cultural activities). Undergraduates receive assistance for networking and mentorship in addition to receiving 4 million won for tuition or 6 million won for housing. Students can apply for the scholarship through the Woowahan Business Owner's Children Scholarship homepage by March 12. The children from immigrant families can receive the scholarship primarily this year.

Welcome Financial Group has donated 8 billion won of scholarships to 5,400 students since 2011 in cooperation with the Bang Jeonghwan Foundation. During the first year, 37 students were granted this scholarship. (Welcome Financial Group BJH Scholarship) Middle and high school and graduate students with good deeds along with a good academic achievement have the opportunity for the scholarship among the customers and children of customers. This year, they held the 27th certification event. The scholarship donation bears the heart of Bang Jeonghwan (小波). Bang Jeonghwan, the teacher, has believed in positive waves through scholars who consistently challenge and dream in the midst of hardships.

Hanjeon (Korea Electric Power Corporation) has donated scholarships for graduates majoring in electric engineering in domestic areas. This scholarship is particularly focused on students from low-income families with good academic performance and awards. (students with impairments or without parents, students from multiple children's families) The total beneficiaries of this scholarship total 1,472 since 2005 to 2024. Overall, 98 students were selected from 76 universities in Korea this year.

 

Foundational scholarship

The Woojung Education and Future Foundation, which sources the private fund of Lee Junggeun, the founder of Booyoung Group and current chairman, has passed on 0.33 billion won of scholarships to 83 students from 29 countries this year. The foundation began in 2008 and started to pass on two scholarships to international students in Korea annually in 2010, expanding the number of beneficiary students and nations and the amount of scholarships to 8 million won per student annually in 2023. A total of 2,449 international students in Korea received 9.6 billion in scholarships on an accumulated basis.

The Doosan Yeongang Foundation from Doosan Group has donated scholarships worth 1.4 billion won to 192 undergraduates. The foundation offers a total of 2.9 billion won of scholarships annually, and this year it facilitates the Doosan Dream Tree Scholarship and the Scholarship for International Families.

Asan Social Welfare Foundation has passed on 3.8 billion won of scholarships to 431 undergraduates and 87 graduates of universities in Korea and overseas. (a total of 518 students) Annually, a maximum of 40 million won (from 20 million won) is granted to 77 graduate students of biomedical science, 10 million won to 10 undergraduates in public healthcare policy studies, and 3 million won to 230 students who are children of MIU (man in uniform; police/army/fire officer). 55 undergraduates from NK escape families, 37 life science field undergraduates from families with financial crises (first scholarship this year) (both are given 6 million won annually), and 100 undergraduates who participated in the industry cooperative field assignment in the long term (1 semester tuition) got scholarships. The accumulated scholarship of the foundation amounts to 87 billion won for 37,000 students since 1977.

Suhyup Foundation (National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives) offers scholarships to 203 children from fishing jobs families or fishermen themselves (71 high schoolers/1 million won, 132 undergraduates/2 million won), and 3 fishery undergraduates are given scholarships (0.35 billion won) on an annual basis. The foundation has passed on a total of 3.915 billion won to 1,800 students between 2013 and 2024.

Kyobo Education Foundation has been offering scholarships to 20 undergraduates in junior year annually. This scholarship covers the entire tuition until graduation. (Kyobo Life Heemang Dasom (hope and love) Scholarship) Besides, scholarships based on academic achievement and book vouchers for Kyobo Bookstore are offered to 18 students this year. The scholarship counts total approximately 6 billion won for 462 students.

The Dreampark Scholarship Foundation has donated 0.1705 billion won to 117 students for the 2024 Dreampark Scholarship. The scholarship is given to students with merits in academic achievement (48), social welfare (49), and experts in arts and sports (20). The entire scholarship count is 1.86 billion won for 1,404 students this year.
