[Consumerwide - Hayoung Chang Reporter/Yohan Bok Reporter] Korean businesses are trying to develop and expand the area of environmental technology, which includes biomaterials and pyrolysis from plastic for the oil refinery process.

S-OIL is using the biomaterial along with the crude oil for the refinery process to produce low-carbon fuels and environmental petrochemical materials. Doosan Enerbility is initiating the supply of carbon-free energy technologies, which include CCUS, ammonia-mixed combustion, new recycling, and hydrogen, to Thailand in cooperation with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).

S-OIL began producing the environmental petrochemical materials (Naphtha, Polyprophene) and low-carbon fuels by using and co-processing biomaterials and plastic based pyrolysis with the crude oil for the refinery process. * Low-carbon fuels: SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and the next generation of biofuels (biodiesel).

This is the first case among domestic oil-refining businesses. S-OIL was permitted for the regulatory sandbox regarding pyrolysis from plastic waste (July) and biomaterial processing (December) last year and began manufacturing them after completing material insert installation.

In considering this, S-OIL intends to expand its environmental product line and conduct an evaluation of the process's influence on total product reaction yield change over the course of the following two years, which will involve adjusting the mix ratio of new alternative materials.

(*"In chemistry, yield, also referred to as reaction yield, is a measure of the quantity of moles of a product formed in relation to the reactant consumed"- Scholarly Community Encyclopaedia about Yield.)

Meanwhile, Doosan Enerbility is initiating the supply of carbon-free energy technology to Thailand. The technology includes CCUS (carbon capture, utilisation, and storage), ammonia mixed combustion, new recycling, and hydrogen. Doosan Enerbility has signed a CCUS and carbon-free energy technology research collaboration MOU in cooperation with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). The Ministry of Environment Korea-related people, including Jeong Hwanjin, the director of the Green Industry Overseas Expansion Support Centre in the Ministry of Environment; Kim Jeonggwan, the director of the marketing department at Doosan Enerbility; and Thidade Eiamsai, the assistant officer of EGAT, have participated in the MOU signing ceremony in Thailand.

They plan to cooperate in extensive areas for the development of carbon-free energy technology, which includes the use of CCUS technology and the development of ammonia-mixed combustion, new recycling, and hydrogen energy technology for the current power stations in Thailand.

Doosan Enerbility is speeding up the commercialization of CCUS technology in Korea. Based on a technology use and development contract with KEPCO Research Institute in 2021, Doosan Enerbility has internalised the wet carbon capture technology. They have also been exploring the feasibility of using the technique at the Changwon Hydrogen Liquefaction Plant, which is now in operation.

Kim Jeonggwan, the director of the department at Doosan Enerbility, said, "CCUS and carbon-free energy technology, including ammonia-mixed combustion, which Doosan Enerbility owns, are going to be an alternative that meets the EGAT CCUS roadmap. We look forward to seeing vital cooperation for a variety of environmental energy projects besides the MOU."
