[Consumerwide - Jinil Kang Reporter / Yohan Bok Reporter] Industries are speeding up in making environmental delivery systems as environmental delivery systems are becoming mandatory due to government policy on the environment. From this year on, new registrations for diesel delivery trucks will not be accepted. Besides, distribution, delivery, and food industries are accepting environmental delivery methods while constructing delivery centres with charging infrastructure and simplifying the delivery process.

Coupang is increasing electric delivery trucks while constructing delivery centres with charge solutions.

Early electric delivery truck adopter Coupang has been building an environmental delivery ecological system by expanding electrical truck integrated delivery centres to overall Korea, starting from five locations, which are Busan, Chungbuk Cheongju, Jeju, and the capital area. Trucks are Bongo Hightop models that are particularly designed for Coupang delivery. The integrated electric truck delivery centre provides electricity directly and facilitates charging and storing simultaneously. The charging infrastructure is estimated to be enough to cover both Coupang Friends and Quick Flexers. Coupang is constantly making various efforts to reduce pollution emissions.

The delivery industry is speeding up the building infrastructure by equipping it with electric and hydrogen delivery trucks.

Due to government policy, only LPG and electric truck models can register. In other words, diesel trucks cannot register or be purchased. In following up, delivery industries have been striving to construct environmental infrastructure.

CJ Logistics began running electric delivery trucks in 2016 and expanded them on a full scale in 2020. Today, CJL has 1500 electric trucks among 23,000 delivery trucks. CJL plans to replace all their delivery trucks with electric and hydrogen trucks by 2030. CJL is also planning to build a charging infrastructure by gradually adding an electric vehicle charging system, starting with delivery services at Gunpo (Gyeonggi) and Ulsans and expanding to other business places that already have electric trucks.

Hanjin just completed remodelling electric and hybrid truck delivery tests in 2021. Currently, Hanjin is running 350 electric models out of 9,000 delivery trucks. Hanjin also plans to increase electric charging stations in overall logistics business locations, starting with Guro (Seoul), Gangseo, Gwangju, and Jeju terminal locations.

Lotte Global Logistics began 1 tonne electric delivery trucks in May 2019, which is the first time in industry history. In 2020, Lotte began using cold chain electric trucks in the delivery field, which is the first time in Korea. Currently, 800 trucks are electric models among the 10,000 delivery trucks.

One of the top runners, Baemin Woowayouths, has changed all their Baemin Rider School Training motorcycles to electric models since September 2022. Currently, the Woowayouths are securing 40 electric motorcycles for delivery, and they plan to expand their electric vehicles. Besides, Woowa is supporting the purchase of electric vehicles for delivery workers with on-off insurance members to save on their expenses.

Yogiyo began business partnerships with LG Energy Solution, KooRoo, and Toyota on an electric motorcycle support project for Yogi Delivery riders on 24th. Yogiyo is offering electric motorcycle lease services for Yogiyo riders and crews, along with a maximum 55% support, which brings the cost down to a minimum of 350,000 won monthly. Yogiyo plans to expand ESG management and create an environmental delivery culture, beginning with facilitating electric delivery vehicles in the midst of an environmental trend recently regarding carbon emissions.

Other industries are enhancing environmental delivery infrastructure.

Ikea Korea initially planned in 2021 to change all the furniture delivery trucks to electric models by 2025, targeting zero emissions of CO2. After that, at the end of last year (December), they approached 47% of their target amount by securing electric trucks for last-mile delivery. In January 2024, IKEA secured additional electric trucks through contracts with partner businesses. IKEA perceives that they will be able to offer furniture delivery in Seoul with electric vehicles by the third quarter of this year. Ikea plans to test a variety of delivery methods for the environment, from small and light delivery from their new branch at Gangdong (2025 open) to delivery between distribution centres. Ikea has been minimising unnecessary drive and distribution processes in its delivery lines, which is effective in reducing carbon emissions. Ikea is also changing distribution points from the outskirts to stores in urban areas for on- and offline delivery. They began an order management system that delivers products from the best store according to stock, human resources, and delivery distance conditions of each store at the time of order.

Pulmuwon is accepting various environmental approaches, targeting to reduce green gas emissions by up to 12% from overall Pulmuone businesses by 2025. In 2019, Pulmuone began a green juice delivery service with the smallest electric vehicle, the D2. In September of the same year, one of Pulmuone's business lines, LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) the fresh market "Olga Wholefood" began electric bicycle delivery service at the Bangie branch.

In September 2023, Puluone began 11-tonne hydrogen electric truck delivery on a large scale, which is the first case in industry history. Pulmuone is adding two hydrogen refrigerated delivery trucks in 2024 and plans to secure 76 hydrogen trucks for moderate- and cold-temperature delivery by 2030.
