Writer's note:  April 22 is Earth Day. The day was made to raise awareness about environmental pollution. This day has begun purely as a civil campaign, unlike the UN World Environment Day (June 5). Earth Day was made right after the offshore oil rig disasters in California, USA, in 1969, hoping that more people would be interested in environmental issues. Since then, they have facilitated various actions to raise awareness on climate change and the necessity of low-carbon life practices for reducing green gas at the industry level. Having the history behind, I would like to report on how industries in Korea are taking the issue as we are facing the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day.

The beauty industry is taking initiative with activities as they celebrate the Day of Earth. The activity includes funding for restoration of ecology and soil, donation activities for forest landscaping in the city, and promotions that lead consumers to use eco-friendly products. In particular, the task seems to have focused more on the direct involvement of value-based consumers compared to the previous tasks. The Loreal Group has chosen three new funding projects for restoration of ecology as they are facing the Day of Earth. Loreal Group has invested 22 million euros (32 billion won) through the' Loreal Fund for Restoration of Ecology. At the same time, the group is closely cooperating with various experts to support the restoration of oceans, forests, land, and mangroves.

The new project is made up of Net Zero, ReforesTerra, and Mangrove Now. It's been evaluated as an innovative approach to carbon capture in soil, reforestation, and mangrove restoration, which might have a positive and widespread effect on the environment and local society.

New Zero is a climate-focused French venture business, and they work in tropical regions such as Cameroon and Brazil. Their project is specialized in removing carbon from the air by transferring agricultural by-products to biochar (biomass and charcoal).

Refores Terra is an environmental business that aims to restore 2000 hectares of Amazon soil. Amazon soil had been damaged because of pasturage. This project forms an environment for natural restoration by transplanting trees on 75% of the land by cooperating with tenants in the downstream river area of Rondonia (Brazil) state.

Mangrove Now supports mangrove forest restoration projects based on the local societies of Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka. The project aims at restoring the damaged land, reaching 20 thousand hectares, and sharing the benefits justly with the local society.

Naturerepublic is facilitating donations and events for the forest landscaping and management in the city as they are facing the Day of Earth. Till the 27th, they are donating 1000 won to a city wood landscaping and management organization each time customers purchase a promotion product at the official mall. A special brand event is applied to clean beauty and eco-friendly material products. They are running the donation certification event for more participation, and when one verifies their certification on Instagram, they have a chance to win a suncream product.

Happbath Amorepacific is offering a Day of Earth promotion on the 27th in Gmarket. They are giving away reusable cups to customers who purchase the designated Happybath bodywash product. The promotion is aimed at value-based customers who do not use disposable cups. Reusable cups can be used a number of times, which can be an alternative way to reduce the use of disposable cups.

GSshop is running a 'Good Beauty for the Earth and Me" promotion through a mobile app until the 23rd. It's an event that introduces products that are manufactured based on conscious beauty, which handles products in eco-friendly ways, from the resources to the containers. This also includes the clean beauty category and vegan beauty. Vegan beauty products do not use animal-based ingredients or animal tests. Vegan, clean, eco-friendly package, refill, the entire project is made up of 4 themes, 75 brands, and 400 products.
